Kuala Lumpur (KL) - Malaysia

February 17, 2018

We are currently in Malaysia on a tour of the west coast.

Here’s a little video of where we started – in Kuala Lumpur where we spent just a few days, we will be heading back there for longer at the end of our trip.

With only 4 days on our first visit our aim was to acclimatise to the climate and time zone.

The heat in KL is different to anywhere else we have travelled. It’s more about the humidity, and when the sun goes in, not much changes.

We did a lot of resting in those 4 days but did get to explore Petrosians.

This is an interactive museum, much like the many children’s museum you find across America.

With a slow educational roller coaster ride in and out (all be it about the petrol industry) easily accessible activities for under 5s (and fun things for over 30s) and frequent live experiment demonstrations along the way; this was a big hit for all the family.

It filled over 3 hours untill we were chucked out at closing time.

You can find it in the shopping centre behind the Petronas Towers.

The Petronas twin towers themselves are saved for our next visit to KL but the KLCC park which they overlook, we did explore.

This is filled with open areas to sit and relax by the lake, surrounded by eateries.

More importantly for us, here you can also find a huge Park area with climbing, sliding, swinging and more.

There are also shallow pools to cool off in.

From our hostel in Wang Dangi we were overlooked by the KL tower – this is an observation tower based at the top of a big hill.

You can walk through the “Eco Forrest” to get there but after an hour of walking in the blazing sun we failed to find the entrance and were guided to the road instead.

To be honest we were pretty underwhelmed by the feeling at the base of KL tower which was just a big tourist trap, for this reason we decided to forgo the trip to the top.

Our favourite day in KL came from a little local knowledge. A fellow Worldschooler we connected with online invited us to lunch at the Restoran Rebung Dato Chef Ismail.

This is a buffet restaurant hidden at the top of a multi story car park (trust me it’s worth the visit!)

We were able to (with local cullinary guidance) try all variaties of Malaysian foods in one hit which was a great experience.

We have found BTW that Malaysian’s love spice, and I’m a Tabasco lover but this is something else! “Mild” food is around my happy point.

After this we explored the KL national park. We got there a little late for the comic book museum and the bird sanctuary but the dinosaur park and bamboo house were hit with all of us.

From our brief 2 full days in KL one thing that is clearly abundant is friendliness and hospitality – the people here are truly welcoming.

Next on to Ipoh but we will be back in KL to explore more.
