Theme Parks are a little guilty pleasure of ours – actually theres no guilt.

We had seen “The Top” as a must do attraction in Penang but what it actually was, seemed difficult to explain.

So we decided to find out.

The Top is a 68 floor building in the middle of Georgetown, Penang; containing a theme park of sorts.

On entering we were met by pumping music, a full LCD TV ceiling, and a very long queue for tickets (Chinese New Year)

At this point we still didn’t really know what we would inside, or what we would be buying tickets for.

I had already read that there were lots of places to eat here and we soon found out we could enter without a ticket to get lunch first.

Once on the other side of the gate not only did we find some great restaurants at the low Malaysian price that we have become accustomed to (meal for 4 for less than £10) But further ticket counters with no queue.

The main ticket that all the counters were peddling was the “fun” ticket which gave you access to almost all the attractions in the building – including entrance to the 68th floor and the glass bottom “rainbow skywalk”

This was our main reason for visiting – an amazing central view of Georgetown, Butterworth and beyond from 68 floors up, with a glass bottomed bridge on both the top two floors.

The view up there was incredible and the opportunity to stare straight down beneath your feet made for a pretty thrilling experience.

I was surprised that the kids stepped onto the glass without a second thought something there Mum (who has a slight thing about heights) did so very cautiously – but she did do it!

Photo tip here – it’s pretty difficult to get a good photo of a group on the skybridge – we tried to use the photographer who wanted only 30rm (£5) for the digital photos but neither children decided to look in the right/same direction or with their eyes open!

My advise would be to get someone to take a photo from the roof, of you on the bridge.

Although the the glass bottom bridge was our main draw to The Top the other attractions – although each short lived – were all pretty good.

Kind of like a glorified fair ground there is a carousel, soft play, wax works, mirror maze and bumper cars.

As well as these though we really enjoyed the Jurassic Park experience – a dinosaur walk through with anamatronic dinosaurs, that although not the best we have seen (that ones in Crete) was good fun for the kids.

There is also a science museum – probably aimed at children a little older than our own and two 4D cinemas.

There are other paid attractions too, such as the WALKING ride on dinosaurs which looked so good we were a little disappointed that no adults were allowed to ride!

All of the attractions individually weren’t anything to write home about but together equal a fun afternoon out on the whole.

We were lucky to be here at Chinese New Year which meant as well as all the above there were also live shows on the main stage and I’m not sure this is the case normally however it did mean with the crowds, music, and constantly changing lights – an afternoon was as much as my head could take, I’m sure the kids would have stayed longer though!

If you feel the same as me by the end but the kids still want a go on the bumper cars on the way out – let them do it; if they are anything like ours, the total lack of spacial awareness will give you a brilliant last show! HILARIOUS.
